Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment

For nearly 40 years, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE) has been at the forefront of historically informed orchestral performance, known for their innovative presentations of classical music. A trailblazing organisation, the OAE is the first orchestra in the UK to be based in a school: Acland Burghley School in London.

Player-led since our inception in 1986, the musicians of the OAE use instruments (or faithful copies) from the time the music they perform was written, energising music of previous centuries for audiences of today. From Bach to Handel, Beethoven to Brahms, for four decades the OAE has been thrilling audiences nationally and internationally - in concert halls, opera houses, schools and pubs - with this revolutionary approach. The OAE are a resident orchestra of the Southbank Centre and Glyndebourne, and last year over 100,000 people worldwide attended their concerts.

The OAE rehearses and has its office and music library in Acland Burghley School, a 1,200-student non-selective state secondary in London. This pioneering partnership gives the majority of students, of whom 35% receive free school meals and 28% have SEN provision, their first encounter with live orchestral music, as well as providing students with opportunities to build creative, technical and administrative skills. Acland Burghley School is also where the OAE initiates and develops programmes as part of their wider national education strategy for young people of all  ages. Each year now, over 35,000 young people make music with the OAE through school workshops, programmes for young people with special educational needs and disabilities, live performances and national residencies.

The OAE has over 100 unique digital productions, including full concerts and unique recordings. These are shared via the OAE's partnership with Marquee TV and their YouTube channel, which has over 110,000 subscribers (making the OAE a Silver Creator Award holder). More than 1 million people engage with the OAE's work online each year.
